Wingate concludes the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational Saturday

Clemson, S.C.----Wingate University senior thrower Andrew Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) was the top non-NCAA Division I finisher in the shot put Saturday in the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson’s Indoor Track and Field Complex. The Tiger Paw Invitational indoor meet included 1,300-plus student-athletes.

Nallenweg recorded a distance of 13.45 meters in the shot put, out-throwing student-athletes from region foes Anderson (S.C.) and North Greenville. His throw was better than 10 Division I student-athletes, including throwers from Western Carolina, S.C. State, High Point, UNC Asheville, Charlotte, Wofford, Florida A&M, USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.

A 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® football student-athlete for the Bulldogs, Nallenweg is participating in his first track and field season at Wingate. “Andrew hit some good throws today,” Wingate head coach Joe Soehnlen says. “We are excited to see what the future holds for Andrew.”

The Wingate men’s 4x400 meter relay team won its section and finished 23rd overall with a time of 3:29.71. The Bulldogs defeated “A” Relay teams from NCAA Division I Davidson, Campbell and UNC Asheville. Wingate’s quartet included graduate student James Robinson (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomores Cole Henderson (Elon, N.C.), Scott Pullen (Roswell, Ga.) and Corey Silvestri (Charlotte, N.C.).

“Both our men’s and women’s relay teams had been on the track for 12-plus hours Saturday,” Soehnlen says. “Each person had doubled-up…participating in other events as well. Our relays have much potential. We are looking forward to posting fast times at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem next week.”

On the women’s side, sophomore Lauren Calhoun (Fayetteville, N.C.) recorded a 27.13 time in the 200 meters. “I was very pleased with our 200 meter runners,” Soehnlen says. “Lauren had pop in her step today. We look forward to watching Lauren and freshmen Brooke Cull (North Shore, New Zealand) and Abigail Bost (Burlington, N.C.) next week at the JDL Fast Track event.”

Cull posted a 1:01.33 time in the women’s 400 meters. Bulldog junior Kellen Williams (Matthews, N.C.) recorded a time of 1:03.92 in the same race. “This (race) was Kellen’s first open 400 meters,” Soehnlen says. “She performed very well…a very exciting thing for the coaches to see.”

Wingate will participate in the Fast Track Championship Tune-up event Saturday, Feb. 16 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. Wingate’s first-ever indoor event was the Winston-Salem State Open Sunday, Jan. 20 at the same facility.
