Wingate redshirt senior defensive end Jack Taylor (Keystone Heights, Fla.) was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 3. Taylor was honored for the second time in his career and first time this season.
Taylor had a career game as the Bulldogs bolted to a 20-0 lead en route to a 33-21 SAC victory over Carson-Newman College in Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field Saturday. Taylor had 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 QB sacks and a forced fumble against the C-N Eagles.
On the 2011 season, Taylor has 30 tackles (14 solo, 16 assists), 10 tackles for loss (minus-29) and 3.5 quarterback sacks (minus-13). He leads the Bulldogs and the SAC in tackles for loss. Taylor is first on the Wingate charts and second on the SAC leader board in QB sacks.
Wingate visits Mars Hill College Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. league encounter. In 2010, the Bulldogs (9-3 overall) won the SAC regular season championship and qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs for the first time in school history.
