Wingate University sophomore middle blocker Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) earned SAC Player of the Week honors for her performance last week. Potter hit an impressive .451 on the week, leading the Bulldogs to three SAC victories. Wingate finished the regular season on a 17-match winning streak, going 26-2 overall and 16-2 in the conference. The 2011 SAC and Region Freshman of the Year averaged 3.08 kills, 1.75 digs and 1.58 blocks per set, piling up 37 kills in 71 attempts.
Potter started her week with nine kills and no errors in 15 swings in Wingate’s sweep over Catawba, hitting .600 while adding seven blocks and five digs. She had a huge match Friday night to help the Bulldogs erase a 2-0 deficit at Lincoln Memorial, just missing out on a triple-double. Potter piled up 16 kills, nine digs and a career-high nine blocks, hitting .394 on the match. She capped her week by registering 12 kills in 23 swings to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win at Carson-Newman, hitting .435 with seven digs and three blocks.
For the second straight year, Potter finished the regular season with the best hitting percentage in the SAC, hitting .319 to edge out teammate Anna Hilton (.316). Potter finished third in the SAC with 1.00 blocks per set, while ranking fourth on the team with 2.01 kills per set.
The Bulldogs are the number one seed in this week’s Food Lion SAC Tournament, which will take place at Brevard. Wingate has won six consecutive SAC Tournament titles, and seven of the last nine. The Bulldogs will take on eight-seeded Anderson Friday at 12 p.m. The winner advances to take on the winner of the Lenoir-Rhyne vs. Newberry match on Saturday. The championship match will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.
