Wingate University senior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) earned SAC women's tennis Player of the Week honors this week, becoming the third different Bulldog to earn the honor in as many weeks. Evers has been named SAC Player of the Week three times in her career.
Evers picked up two of Wingate's five victories in Monday's 5-4 victory over No. 40 GRU Augusta. The 2013 first team All-SAC selection teamed with junior Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) for a convincing 8-2 victory at number one doubles against the Jaguars. Evers added a 6-2, 6-4 victory at number one singles to help the Bulldogs register their second victory over a top-40 opponent in as many days. Wingate knocked off 12th-ranked Francis Marion 6-3 the day before the GRU Augusta match.
Evers and the Bulldogs won their fifth straight match Monday afternoon, opening SAC play with a 5-4 win over Newberry, which included a 6-0, 6-4 win from Evers at number one singles. Wingate is ranked 50th in the nation and sixth in the region, with three straight victories over regionally ranked opponents. The 'Dogs are 5-0 against Division II opponents this year. Wingate will host Queens Thursday at 1 p.m.
