Wingate University sophomore infielder Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) earned SAC Player of the Week honors this week. She helped lead the Bulldogs to five victories last week as the Wingate offense piled up 54 runs in six contests.
Helms racked up 15 hits in six games last week, hitting .556 while leading the Bulldogs to a 5-1 record. She had five doubles, a triple, eight RBI and eight runs scored while also drawing two walks, compiling a .586 on-base percentage to go along with an .815 slugging percentage.
Helms had a hit in every game, while posting multiple hits in five of six contests. She was three-for-four with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and two runs in game one against Belmont Abbey, while going three-for-three in game two with a run scored. She had two hits including a double in game one at Queens, scoring two runs. Helms went four-for-five in game one at Mars Hill, driving in four runs while scoring twice. She capped her week with a double, RBI and run scored at Mars Hill.
Helms ranks second on the team with a .379 batting average, leading the team with 24 RBI and 31 runs scored. She is second on the team with five homers, while leading the Bulldogs with two triples and nine doubles. Helms also leads the way with a .451 on-base percentage, ranking second with a .621 slugging percentage. She is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak, while notching a total of 10 multi-hit games this year, which includes five games with three or more hits.
