On Friday, March 13, Wingate senior high jumper George Williams (Fayetteville, N.C.) received indoor All-American honors with his fifth-place finish in the NCAA Division II indoor national championship meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Williams cleared 2.07 meters in his second NCAA indoor appearance, writing his name in the WU record books with the first All-American trophy in Wingate’s senior college track history.
Williams cleared 2.02 meters and 2.07 meters on his first tries at each height Friday. He gave 2.12 meters three chances, but could not convert. Lewis (Ill.) senior Isaac Jean-Paul (Gurnee, Ill.) won the 2015 NCAA Division II indoor high jump title with his 2.21 meters effort.
Williams is a three-time All-Southeast Region choice in the indoor high jump. His top jump this season was a WU indoor school record 2.12 meters during his first-place performance at East Tennessee State University Buccaneer Invitational on Feb. 7. He was tied for seventh on the 2015 NCAA Division II performance list entering nationals.
