Wingate University junior high jumper Vanisha Wilshire (Louisburg, N.C.) earned AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday afternoon. Wilshire receives this honor for only the second time in her illustrious career, as indoor track and field is the newest sport on the SAC radar this year.
A multiple-time NCAA All-American, Wilshire won the women's high jump in the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday at the JDL Fast Track. Wilshire earned a gold medal for the second time in two tries this season. She posted a mark of 1.68 meters Saturday (an NCAA provisional qualifying mark). Wilshire was fifth in the WFU Invite women's long jump with her leap of 5.44 meters.
"Vanisha continues her great indoor season start with another victory in the women's high jump," Wingate head track and field coach Travis LeFlore says. "In addition, she recorded a season's best mark in the women's long jump. Vanisha works hard every day. We're starting to see things piece together for her this season, which should result into her best season yet."
