Gus Chagas won two national titles at the 2010 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships March 10-13, capping an outstanding four-year Bulldog career. Wingate completed the four-day meet with 290 points, equaling the best-ever team finish with a sixth-place showing.

On Saturday, March 13, Chagas and three teammates won the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 2:58.22. The relay victory was Wingate’s fourth national championship overall and second of the 2010 event, held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium. The Bulldog national championship 400 Freestyle Relay team includes (in order of appearance) Chagas, freshman Rory Julyan (Cape Town, South Africa) and seniors Daniel De Francisco (Cali, Colombia) and Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.).

Chagas earned his second individual national championship Thursday night, March 11, as the Bulldog All-American won the 200 Freestyle on day two of the 2010 national event. In his signature event, Chagas won the national championship as a freshman in 2007. This year, Chagas touched first with a time of 1:37.53. A model of consistency, Chagas won the 2007 race with a time of 1:38.70.
