Belmont, N.C.----The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders defeated the 20th-ranked Bulldogs of Wingate University 4-1 in NCAA Division II men’s soccer action Monday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Bulldogs see their eight-game winning streak snapped, as they fall to 8-2 overall. Belmont Abbey improves to 6-6-1 overall.
Belmont Abbey scored the match’s first four goals, with inaugural tally coming on a
James Lawrence Forbes score from an assist by
Ross Smith 8:15 into the match. Freshman
Zach Wertis gave the Crusaders a two-goal lead 31 minutes later from a feed by
Emmanual Yamson.
Yamson gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute. Belmont Abbey added its final tally in the 75th minute, when Crusader
Sunny Makh recorded his first collegiate goal. Makh took an assist from
Adrian Mendoza to conclude the Crusaders’ scoring.
Wingate got on the board at the 79-minute mark. Sophomore
Piero Riva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected a pass at the top of the box, dribbled to his right and connected on a 20-yard strike into the upper right corner for the goal.
The Bulldogs outshot the Crusaders 13-11. The visitors held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Wingate returns to the pitch Wednesday, hosting Chowan University for a 7 p.m. contest at the WU Soccer Complex.
