Calabash, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s golf team is second after the first round of the 10th annual Lenoir-Rhyne University/Myrtle Beach Women’s Golf Intercollegiate. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being played at Meadowlands Golf Club (par 72, 5802 yards).
A 2009 NCAA Division II tournament team qualifier, Wingate shot 314 Monday. The Bulldogs are two shots behind tournament leader Newberry College (312). Thirteen teams are competing in this year’s event.

Ashley Denton (Wendell, N.C.),
Andrea Velasquez (Anaco, Venezuela) and
Allie Osberg (Chester Springs, Pa.) each posted a five-over-par 77 Monday. The Bulldog trio is tied with three other golfers for third place.
Bulldog junior
Anna Lee Croom (Asheboro, N.C.) rounded out Wingate’s counters on Monday, recording an 83. Freshman
Megan Levy (Zebulon, N.C.) carded a first-round 89 for the Bulldogs.
On the individual leader boards, UNC Pembroke junior
Katja Dammann tops the chart. She shot a 75 Monday. Tusculum College senior
Mary Ann Vizcarrondo holds sole possession of second place with a first-day 76. The final round is slated for Tuesday (special thanks to Tusculum College SID
