Savannah, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs dropped their first match of the season, losing 3-2 to Barry University on day two of the AASU/Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic in Alumni Arena. Barry won by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-8 to improve to 7-1 on the year. The Bulldogs fall to 12-1 overall.
Junior middle blocker Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) led the Wingate attack with 22 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.) added 16 kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) collected 41 assists and 18 digs while sophomore libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, Ill.) racked up 13 digs.
Junior outside hitter Julia Teixiera (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) led the Barry attack with 18 kills to go along with 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Ady Alcantar (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 15 kills and 10 digs while senior outside hitter Julia Ridley (Madisonville, Ky.) chipped in with 10 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Julie Priester (Indialantic, Fla.) handed out 43 assists to go along with 12 digs while junior libero Spenser Rigg (Honolulu, Hawaii) racked up 27 digs.
A kill from senior outside hitter Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, Ohio) gave Wingate a 15-11 lead in the first set. Barry fought back, tying it at 18 on a block from junior middle blocker Stefanie Sveiven (Quartz Hill, Calif.) and Ridley. Kills from Sveiven and Alcantara gave the Buccaneers a 21-19 lead. Another Alcantara kill made it 23-20. A block from senior middle hitter Samara Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished the set.
An ace from Alcantara gave Barry a 14-10 lead in the second set. Wingate battled back to cut it to one when an ace from Gale made it 18-17. Another Alcantara kill gave Barry a 21-19 advantage. The Bulldogs answered with kills from Gale and senior defensive specialist Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.) to tie it at 22. A Barry error, followed by a block from Gale and sophomore outside hitter Jenny O’Brien (Matthews, N.C.) gave Wingate a 24-22 lead. Gale finished the set with a kill.
A Gale kill gave the Bulldogs a 15-11 lead in the third set. Ferreira cut it to two with a kill to make it 15-13. A Gale kill, followed by a block from Billo and Gale made it 17-13. An O’Brien kill gave Wingate a 22-17 lead. The Buccaneers cut the lead to two when a kill from Alcantara made it 23-21. Gale answered with a kill and Wingate clinched the set on a Barry error.
An ace from Ridley gave the Buccaneers a 17-14 lead. The Bulldogs fought back to tie it on an ace from junior middle blocker Rebecca Bloemer (Louisville, Ky.). Consecutive errors by Barry gave the Bulldogs a 21-20 advantage. An ace from Alcantara and a kill from Teixeira gave Barry a 23-21 lead. Teixeira finished the set with a kill.
The Bucaneers raced out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth, capped by a Teixeira kill. Wingate cut it to three on a Billo kill to make it 8-5. A Barry error made it 11-8. The Buccaneers answered by scoring the final four points of the match, capped by a kill from Alcantara.
Wingate hit .158 for the match, with 59 kills and 27 errors in 203 attacks. Barry hit .259, collecting 67 kills and 19 errors in 185 attacks. Barry racked up nine total blocks, led by Teixeira and Sveiven with four each. The Bulldogs had eight blocks, led by Gale.
