Bulldogs and #19 Pirates battle to 2-2 tie

The Wingate University women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season, playing to a 2-2 tie against the 19th-ranked Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Division II women’s soccer action Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs move to 4-0-2 on the season while the Pirates are now 4-1-1.

AASU got on the board first when freshman midfielder Morgan Mitchell (Lilburn, Ga.) headed in a corner kick from senior forward Kristin Burton (Ocala, Fla.) at the 21:19 mark of the first half.

Wingate had the answer when sophomore forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) took a lead pass from junior midfielder Julie Zielinski (Erie, Pa.) and chipped it over the head of the goalie for her third goal of the year to make it 1-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the half.

The Bulldogs took the lead less than four minutes later when junior defender Samantha Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) found the back of the net for the first time this year on a free kick from just outside the box. The Bulldogs would take a 2-1 lead into intermission.

AASU tied the game nine minutes into the second half. Burton once again set it up on a corner kick while senior defender Kayley Ralton (Edinburgh, Scotland) finished it off with a header for her first goal of the year to make it 2-2.

The final 56 minutes of the game would go scoreless. The Pirates held an 11-7 advantage in shots including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Wingate freshman goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) collected four saves for the Bulldogs while junior Tracey Mitchell (Albany, Ga.) collected one save for the Pirates.

Wingate returns to action Friday evening, hosting Embry-Riddle (Fla.) at 7 p.m. The bulldogs will host UNC Pembroke Tuesday at 7 p.m. Armstrong Atlantic State returns to action Saturday, hosting Clayton State at 3 p.m.
