Bulldogs top Barton 5-1 Saturday night

The Wingate University women’s soccer team notched another impressive victory Saturday night, topping Barton College 5-1 to move to 3-0 on the season. The Barton Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the year.

Wingate got on the board first, with senior defender Madi Welch (Monroe, N.C.) gathering a loose ball in front of the net and scoring her first goal of the season. Barton had the answer, scoring 29 seconds later when freshman midfielder Morgan Brush (Princeton, N.C.) found sophomore forward Hilary Peterson (Hampstead, N.C.) on a cross as she netted her first goal of the year.

The Wingate Bulldogs took the lead at the 32:12 mark when junior forward Jenni Barbett (Severn, Md.) found the back of the net for the second time this year on the feed from freshman forward Teri Magee (Derry, Northern Ireland).

The hosts scored a pair of quick goals in the second half, starting with sophomore forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) scoring her first goal of the year on a shot from 25 yards out.

Two minutes later, junior forward Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) netted her team-high sixth goal of the year to make it 4-1 at the 52:22 mark. Adams had the assist on the play. The Bulldogs finished off the scoring at the 57:05 mark when sophomore forward Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.) scored her fourth goal of the season. The goal was set up by sophomore midfielder Kelsey McCormick (Hockessin, Del.).

Wingate out-shot Barton 28-6 while holding a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Catie Avery (East Hampton, Conn.) collected three saves for the Bulldogs, while also stopping a penalty kick in the opening moments of the game. Barton freshman goalkeeper Angelina Lovette (Lillington, N.C.) collected 11 saves for the guests.

Wingate returns to action Monday, traveling to Lander for a 7 p.m. start. Barton hosts Converse next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
