Casey King gives Wingate thrilling 1-0 win over LRU on Senior Day

BOX SCORE

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Casey King (Danvers, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season in the 78th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Wingate snaps Lenoir-Rhyne’s 12-match unbeaten streak and hands the Bears their first SAC loss of the season. The Bulldogs improve to 8-2-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 12-2-1 overall and 7-1 in the SAC.

Lenoir-Rhyne was held scoreless for only the second time this season. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 14-13. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) recorded the shutout with seven saves. LRU sophomore net minder Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) lost for the first time this season. She had six saves. Both Boucher and Scruggs are 5-1-1 overall this season.

King was in the right place at the right time for the match-winner. Wingate junior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) sent a corner kick into the box. Classmate Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.) launched a header towards the goal mouth that Scruggs batted away. King headed the carom into the goal to give the hosts the victory.

In pre-match ceremonies, Wingate honored five seniors playing their last season in the blue-and-gold. The quintet has won 38 matches in four seasons, tying a school record with 14 victories in 2008. The group includes forwards Jenni Barbett (Severn, Md.) and Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.), defenders Samantha Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) and Terry Chandler (Charleston, S.C.) and midfielder Julie Zielinski (Erie, Pa.). Both Baldwin and Zielinski were named to the ESPN Academic All-District III team last year, while Williams is a member of the University’s All-Decade team.

Wingate will have little time to rest, as the Bulldogs visit St. Andrews Presbyterian College Monday for a 3 p.m. contest. Wingate returns to SAC play Wednesday, hosting league newcomer Anderson (S.C.) University at 4 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Queens University of Charlotte Tuesday at 7 p.m.
