McKenna and Bulldogs survive Anderson 2-1 in OT Wednesday night

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) scored the match-winner on a picture-perfect overtime play Wednesday night, helping the Bulldogs outlast Anderson (S.C.) University 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action at the WU Soccer Complex.

Wingate (13-2, 7-1 SAC) has won 10 matches in a row. The Anderson Trojans (11-5-1, 6-3 SAC) saw a seven-match winning streak end in their regular season finale. The Bulldogs hit the road Saturday, visiting Lincoln Memorial University for a 4 p.m. contest.

Wingate All-American senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) hit a streaking McKenna in stride with a pinpoint pass as the speedy forward was moving down the left sideline. McKenna converted, beating AU sophomore goalkeeper Lukas Hesse (Berlin, Germany) for his team-best 12th goal in the 95th minute. Bulldogs senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) got the play started with a strong clearing pass to Mulholland.

Bulldog junior midfielder Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) got things going in the 27th minute, firing a missile from 30 yards out into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal. Senior midfielder Jack Vundum (Birmingham, England) assisted Imperatriz, allowing him to score his third goal of the season.

Anderson had several opportunities, but the SAC newcomers could not take advantage until the 74:49 mark, when junior midfielder Mark Smith (London, England) tallied his third goal of the season after a nice right-to-left pass from reigning SAC Player of the Week Lasse Sohrweide (Flensburg, Germany). The score was Smith’s only shot on goal of the evening.

Wingate outshot Anderson 10-7, posting a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Calandra earned his 13th victory of the season, recording three saves in 94:59 of action. Hesse also went the distance, allowing two goals and notching five saves.
