Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University cross country teams swept the Pre-South Atlantic Conference Invitational Thursday at the WU Cross Country facility. In the women’s race, the Wingate Blue team had 18 points, while second-place Catawba College posted 46 points. On the men’s side, the Wingate Blue team had 21 points. Catawba was second with 63 points, edging the Wingate Gold team (64 points).
Both men and women ran 5K races in the tune-up for the Food Lion SAC meet Saturday, Nov. 6. Wingate freshman
Keeley Wood (Sanford, N.C.) won the women’s 5K race with a time of 19:10. Classmate
Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) won the men’s 5K race with a time of 15:36. Twenty-nine women and 34 men completed the two races.
In the men’s 5K event, the Bulldogs had eight of the top 10 finishers. Sophomore
Andrew Smith (Oakboro, N.C.) was third with a time of 15:51. Freshman
Binyam Ateka Belachew (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) was fourth at 16:05. Freshmen
James Lawson (Raleigh, N.C., 16:31) and
Steve McAndrew (Felton, Pa., 16:48) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
In his final regular season home race, graduate student
RJ Voetsch (Evan Mills, N.Y.) was eighth at 16:50. Junior
Ryan Burris (New London, N.C., 16:58) and freshman
Max Courtney (Monroe, N.C., 17:03) rounded out Wingate’s top 10 finishers in ninth and 10th, respectively. Catawba sophomore
Christian Crifasi (Ramseur, N.C.) led the Indians, placing second with a time of 15:46.
In the women’s 5K race, Wingate claimed six of the top 10 spots. Freshman
Brianna Stevens (Coshocton, Ohio, 20:07) and sophomore
Melanie Wollenberg (New Lexington, Ohio, 20:20) finished second and third, respectively. Senior
Alicia Harbold (Ephrata, Pa.) was fifth. The ESPN Academic All-America® candidate posted a time of 20:35.
Bulldog junior
Lindsey Lippencott (Forest Hill, Md.) was seventh at 20:58. Freshman teammate
Macy Adkins (Larue, Ohio) rounds out Wingate’s top 10 finishers with her eighth-place showing (21:02). The top non-Wingate finisher was Catawba freshman
Olivia Myers (Lexington, N.C.), who finished fourth with a time of 20:25.
The Bulldogs will host the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference meet on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the WU Cross Country facility. The men’s 8K race will be held at 9 a.m. The women’s 5K race will follow at 10:15 a.m. Admission for the event is free.
