Late OT goal gives Mars Hill 1-0 win at Wingate

Mars Hill College freshman forward Richard Osterloh (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored with 49 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Lions a 1-0 victory over seventh-ranked Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action Saturday night at the WU Soccer Complex. Mars Hill improves to 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Bulldogs, who played a man down for much of the second half and overtime, out-shot Mars Hill 15-5 on the night. Wingate held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, while taking four corner kicks compared to Mars Hill’s three.

Senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) and freshman forward Sam Allen (Stratford-upon-Avon, England) led Wingate with three shots each. Senior midfielder Friddy Hoegener (Niederhassel, Germany) led Mars Hill with a pair of shots on the night.

With under a minute remaining in the first overtime, Osterloh got behind the defense and was able to chip a shot over the Wingate senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) for the game winner.

Sophomore goalkeeper Zac Scott (Pittsboro, N.C.) notched three saves for the Lions to preserve the shutout. Calandra had one save for the Bulldogs.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, hosting Lander at 7 p.m. The Lions host Limestone Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
