Bulldog Stampede Results
Wingate, N.C.----In the inaugural Bulldog Stampede cross country meet, the winner’s trophies for both the men’s and women’s races won’t have to travel far, as the Wingate University men and women won their respective races on a steamy Saturday morning at the Wingate Cross Country complex.
In the women’s 5K race, Belmont Abbey freshman
Olivia Flaggert crossed the finish line first with a time of 20:38, with Brevard freshman
Angela Canale following with a 20:44. Wingate freshman
Keeley Wood (Sanford, N.C.) led the Wingate-White squad with a third-place finish, crossing the line in 21:02. Wingate senior
Alicia Harbold (Ephrata, Pa.) finished in sixth place (21:58); she was followed by sophomore
Melanie Wollenberg (New Lexington, Ohio) in seventh (22:20) and freshman
Brianna Stevens (Coshocton, Ohio) in eighth (22:27). Other finishers for the Wingate-White team were junior
Lindsey Lippencott (Forest Hill, Md.) in 13th (22:58) and freshman
Taylor Varnadoe (Marietta, Ohio) in 14th (23:08).
The Wingate-Blue team was led by freshman
Macy Adkins (Glenmont, Ohio) with her 16th place showing (23:58). Freshmen
Jordan Gallagher (Norwood, N.C., 24:23) and
Taylor Keyes (Lenoir, N.C., 24:26), sophomore
Laura Colwell (Mooresville, N.C., 25:09), junior
Danielle Nichols (Henryville, Pa., 26:46) and freshmen
Mackenzie Traywick (Marshville, N.C., 27:19) and
Brittany Brown (Chesapeake, Va., 31:54) also completed the race for the host Bulldogs.
The Wingate-White team finished with 27 points. Pfeiffer University finished in second place with 77, followed by Brevard College (91), Wingate-Blue (106), Tusculum College (113), Livingstone College (118) and Newberry College (151). Belmont Abbey College did not have enough runners to score.
Defending South Atlantic Conference individual champion
Simon Holzapfel of Tusculum picked up where he left off last season, winning the men’s 8K race with a time of 26:09. Wingate-White freshman
Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) finished second (27:19), with Newberry senior
Brad House finishing third (27:35). The Bulldogs would pick up the fourth and seventh positions with sophomore
Andrew Smith (Oakboro, N.C., 27:56) and freshman
Binyam Ateka Belachew (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 28:32). Other finishers for the Wingate-White team were freshman
Steve McAndrew (Felton, Pa., 29:54) in 12th place,
Max Courtney (Monroe, N.C., 30:02) in 15th place and
James Lawson (Wake Forest, N.C., 30:42) in 20th place.
Graduate student
RJ Voetsch (Evan Mills, N.Y., 30:09) led the Wingate-Blue team with a 16th place finish. Other Wingate-Blue finishers were freshman

The Wingate-White team took the winner’s trophy with a team score of 40. Belmont Abbey finished second with 53 points, followed by Brevard (104), Tusculum (117), Wingate-Blue (120), Pfeiffer (124), Newberry (139) and Livingstone (218).
Wingate will travel to Louisville, Ky. Saturday for the ninth annual Greater Louisville Classic. The event will be held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park; the race serves as the pre-national meet. The Bulldogs will host the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 6.
