Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored a pair of impressive goals to lead the Bulldogs past the Saints of Limestone College 3-2 in NCAA Division II men’s soccer action Saturday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the season, while Limestone falls to 1-1 on the year.
Senior forward
Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) got the Bulldogs on the board first, bouncing one off a defender and into the net for his second goal of the young season.
Limestone answered when junior midfielder
Keegan Zieda (Melbourne, Australia) headed one in off a cross from freshman forward
Jack Bailey (London, England) to tie the game at one 17:25 into the first half.
Imperatriz gave the Bulldogs the lead with 2:37 remaining in the half, lining one into the upper corner from 35 yards out to put Wingate on top heading into intermission.
Imperatriz added another goal 11 minutes into the second half, lining one in with the left foot from 30 yards out off a feed from McKenna to make it 3-1.
Limestone made it interesting late, when freshman defender
Mark Mitchell (Paisley, Scotland) found the back of the net with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.
The Bulldogs out-shot Limestone 14-11 on the day, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) notched a pair of saves for the Bulldogs. Junior goalkeeper
H.B. Lockwood (Anderson, S.C.) collected six saves for the Saints.
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, hosting St. Andrews at 7 p.m. Limestone hosts Francis Marion Wednesday at 4 p.m.
