Lander tops Wingate 2-0 Saturday afternoon

Lander University sophomore midfielder Jamie Shaw (Columbia, S.C.) scored twice to lead the Bearcats to a 2-0 NCAA Division II Southeast Region victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at the Wingate Soccer Facility.

Shaw has three goals in two early-season victories for the LU Bearcats (2-0 overall). The Bulldogs drop their season opener to fall to 0-1 overall. Wingate hosts Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday at 4 p.m. Lander concludes a three-match road swing at Erskine College Wednesday (5 p.m.).

Lander scored once in each half. In the 42nd minute, Shaw picked a loose ball from a charging Wingate freshman goalkeeper Carly Rives (Matthews, N.C.) and chipped the ball into the back of the nets. Shaw converted a penalty kick at 49:35 to conclude the scoring.

Wingate outshot Lander 8-5, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate sophomore midfielder Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.) had three shots to match Lander’s Jamie Shaw. In the first half, Bulldog senior defender Samantha Baldwin (Stallings, N.C.) missed a close-range shot wide left. Wingate had 10 corner kicks, compared to one for the Peach Belt Conference visitors from Lander.

Lander senior goalkeeper Katherine Baltz (Tullahoma, Tenn.) picked up her second triumph of the young season. Baltz collected five saves. In her Bulldog debut, Rives did not record a save. Both Rives and Baltz went the distance Saturday.
