Anderson, S.C.----Wingate University freshman guard
Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs past the Trojans of Anderson University 65-56 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday evening. The ‘Dogs win their third straight game, improving to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the SAC. Anderson falls to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the league.
Williams knocked down three-of-four shots from three-point range on the night, while also hitting all three shots from the free throw line. Sophomore guard
Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) added 14 points, while junior forward
Simone Rutledge (Atlanta, Ga.) had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Ashley Abed (Oakton, Va.) and
Alexa Neal (Greensboro, N.C.) led the Trojans with 13 points each.
The Bulldogs used an 11-0 run to take a 30-15 lead with 4:31 remaining in the first half. Williams started the spurt with a three-point play, while Rutledge and Wollett also had three-point plays in the flurry. Tilde Ahlin (Sodertalje, Sweden) in the final 1:20 of the half cut the Bulldog lead to 14 at intermission.
The Trojans battled back in the second half, using a 14-2 run to tie the contest at 40 with 11:35 remaining. Neal got it started with a three, while a triple from Abed tied the game. Threes from Wollett and Williams pushed the Wingate advantage back to five at the 5:54 mark. Rutledge added a pair of free throws to give the ‘Dogs a seven-point lead with five minutes to go.
Neal knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the lead to four with three minutes remaining. Wollett knocked down a jumper to make it 59-53. Williams followed with a triple to push the Wingate lead back to nine with 1:06 to go. The lead would not go below eight the rest of the way.
Wingate shot 36.4 percent from the field, while hitting six-of-10 shots from three-point range (60 percent). The ‘Dogs also hit 19-of-21 free throws on the night (90.5 percent). The Trojans shot 35.1 percent from the field, while knocking down eight-of-30 shots from beyond the arc (26.7 percent). The Bulldogs held a 37-36 rebounding advantage, and had 16 second-chance points compared to Anderson’s seven.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for a 6 p.m. start. Anderson travels to Brevard Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
