Saints defeat Bulldogs 3-1 Saturday

Gaffney, S.C.----The Limestone College Saints defeated visiting Wingate University 3-1 in NCAA Division II men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. Limestone improves to 6-3 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-6 overall on the year.
 
The Saints got on the board 11:25 into the contest, when freshman forward Jorge Mackenna (Santiago, Chile) netted his fourth goal of the year. Sophomore midfielder Bryce Ziada (Melbourne, Australia) had the assist on the play.
 
Wingate tied the match 14 minutes later, when freshman forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his team-best fourth goal of the year to make the score 1-1. The Saints had the answer two minutes later, when Ziada found Mackenna once again to put Limestone on top 2-1 heading to intermission.
 
The Saints added some insurance 5:28 into the second half, when freshman midfielder Hodaka Yonezawa (Gifu City, Japan) scored his third goal of the year off the pass from sophomore forward Jack Bailey (London, England).
 
Limestone out-shot Wingate 14-12 on the day, while holding an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper H.B. Lockwood (Anderson, S.C.) notched a pair of saves for the Saints. Freshman Stephen Harris (Lincolnton, N.C.) had five saves for the Bulldogs.
 
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for a 4 p.m. start. Limestone hosts Pfeiffer University Thursday at 4 p.m.
