Jefferson City, Tenn.---Wingate University sophomore forward Chandler Murphy (Pawleys Island, S.C.) scored the only goal of the match, helping the Bulldogs earn a 1-0 South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer victory over Carson-Newman College Saturday afternoon at McCown Field.
 
Wingate (10-2 overall, 5-0 SAC) has won nine matches in a row. Carson-Newman falls to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit NCAA Division II number nine Lenoir-Rhyne University next Saturday (Oct. 22) at 5 p.m. The C-N Eagles host Pfeiffer University Tuesday at 4 p.m.
 
Early in the first half, Wingate senior defender Stefanie Schroeder (Dallas, Texas) launched a diagonal cross that split the defense. As a result, Murphy had a one-on-one opportunity. Murphy finished strong, finding the back of the nets for her fifth goal of the season.
 
“The early score allowed us to create more chances,” Wingate head coach Gary Curneen says. “This was a big victory for us. In the last 15 minutes, I thought we showed character, discipline and consistency…to see the game through to its conclusion.”
