'Dogs finish sixth at Rendleman; Herrera makes all-tourney team

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s golf team improved its team score by eight strokes, finishing sixth in the 2011 Patsy Rendleman Invitational tournament Tuesday. The Bulldogs posted a 317 Tuesday to complete the 36-hole event with a 642. The Rendleman Invitational is hosted by Catawba College at the 5,998-yard, par-72 Country Club of Salisbury.

Newberry College won the team title with a 601. Spots two through five were occupied by Carson-Newman (619), Tusculum (628), Columbus State (631) and Queens University of Charlotte (637). Fifteen teams and 85 individuals competed for the 2011 Rendleman title.

Wingate freshman Lucia Careaga Herrera (Madrid, Spain) earned a spot on the Rendleman all-tournament with her fifth-place finish. She shot a one-under-par 71 Tuesday to complete the two-day event with a 150. Careaga Herrera’s 71 is the best round of her young college career. She equaled Newberry junior (and tournament runner-up) Julia Daneshfar for the best round of the day.

Bulldog freshman Karli Soracco (Turner, Maine) posted a 76 Tuesday to finish at 159. She tied for 20th place. Sophomore Samantha Pugh-Gilder (Pinehurst, N.C.) recorded back-to-back 82s to complete the tournament in a tie for 33rd at 164.

Wingate sophomore Kathryn Rand (Hampstead, N.C.) tied for 55th place at 174 (81-93). Junior Megan Levy (Zebulon, N.C.) matched Careaga Herrera for most improved from the first day to the second day, as she shaved eight strokes from her day one score. Levy tied for 76th place at 184 (96-88). Sophomore Morgan Pegram (Pfafftown, N.C.) competed as an individual, tying for 46th place at 170 (84-86).

North Carolina State University freshman Lindsay McGetrick won the individual title with a two-day score of 145, five strokes ahead of Wingate’s Careaga Herrera. McGetrick shot 73 Monday and 72 Tuesday. Wingate will compete in the Flagler (Fla.) College Fall Slam Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24-25.
