Bulldogs shutout Catawba 2-0 for 10th straight win

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs notched their 10th consecutive victory Tuesday night, defeating Catawba College 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action at Frock Field. Wingate collects its fifth straight shutout, moving to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the SAC.

The first half went scoreless, with Wingate holding a 10-1 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs got on the board 1:32 into the second half. A corner kick from senior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) found freshman forward AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.), who netted her fifth goal of the year from six yards out to give Wingate the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added some insurance with just under 17 minutes remaining in regulation. The goal once again came via a corner kick from Adams. Freshman midfielder Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) was there to head home her fifth goal of the year to push the lead to two.

The two goals would be all of the offense necessary for the Bulldogs to collect their 10th consecutive victory. The Wingate defense was once again stifling, holding Catawba to two shots on the night, with one on goal.

The Bulldogs finished with 15 shots and 11 on goal. Freshman Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) notched a save to preserve Wingate’s sixth straight shutout. Senior Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) had nine saves for the Indians. The Bulldogs have not allowed a goal in 563 minutes. Wingate has out-scored its opponents 16-0 in league games this year.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling to number six Lenoir-Rhyne University for a 5 p.m. start. Catawba travels to Tusculum College Saturday at 2 p.m.
