Kofi Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) scored a pair of goals in the first half to lead the Wolves past visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves improve to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Freshman forward
Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had both of Wingate’s goals on the afternoon.
The Wolves got on the board first 14:51 into the opening half when Kufuor scored his third goal of the season. Junior defender
Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) and junior forward
Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) assisted on the play for the Wolves.
Wingate had the answer, tying the game four minutes later on Da Silva’s fifth goal of the year.
Kufour’s second goal of the day put the Wolves back on top in the 27th minute. Less than two minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Joao Delgado (Atlanta, Ga.) scored on a penalty kick to give Newberry a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit back to one less than a minute later on Da Silva’s second goal of the day, scoring on feed from senior midfielder
Tom Poole (Birmingham, England).
That would be all of the scoring on the afternoon. The Bulldogs could not get the equalizer, despite out-shooting Newberry 24-7 on the afternoon. Wingate also held an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Stephen Harris (Lincolnton, N.C.) notched a save for the Bulldogs.
