Bulldogs shutout Tornados 3-0 for seventh straight win

The Wingate University Bulldogs notched their seventh consecutive victory, shutting out the visiting Tornados of Brevard 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 2-10 overall and 0-6 in the SAC.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board 10 minutes into the contest when sophomore midfielder Meaghan Barry (Naples, Fla.) ripped one home from just inside the box to make the score 1-0.
 
Wingate took a two-goal lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore forward Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) headed home her fourth goal of the season. The cross came from senior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.), who celebrated Senior Day with her second assist of the year.
 
A pair of seniors hooked up for the third goal of the contest 6:26 into the second half, when Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) scored her team-best fifth goal of the year on the assist from Megan Mastalerz (Elkridge, Md.).
 
The Bulldogs outshot Brevard 20-1 on the afternoon, holding an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate secures its third straight shutout, and fourth in the last five games. Freshman Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win in goal for the Bulldogs. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va.) had eight saves for the Tornados.
 
Wingate returns to action Tuesday, hosting Tusculum College at 7 p.m. The Tornados host Anderson (S.C.) University Wednesday at 2 p.m.
