Box Score

Anderson, S.C.----Anderson University senior midfielder Ryan Messick (Point Pleasant, W.Va.) scored an unassisted goal with four-plus minutes remaining to give the number 11 Trojans a 2-1 come-from-behind men’s soccer victory over Wingate University Tuesday afternoon. The contest was a quarterfinal match in the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.

Anderson improves to 15-3 overall, while Wingate is 4-13 overall. The 2011 SAC regular season champions, Anderson will face number four seed Lincoln Memorial University Friday in a 3 p.m. semi-final match. The semi-final matches and the championship contest will be held in the Manchester Meadows Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.

“I am very disappointed for our boys…because they didn’t deserve (tonight’s result),” Wingate head coach Gary Hamill says. “One moment of madness on a decision changed the entire outcome of the match.”

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Wingate scored first, as freshman forward Fabio Azerado (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his first goal of the season on a beautiful assist from junior midfielder Joshua Jokic (Brisbane, Australia) in the 58th minute. The Bulldogs held the advantage until the 71:23 mark, when Anderson senior forward Lasse Sohrweide (Flensburg, Germany) converted a penalty kick for his SAC-leading 16th goal of the season.

Wingate freshman forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit the post in the 79th minute. Da Silva had four shots to lead the Bulldogs, who outshot the Trojans 14-8. Sohrweide had four of Anderson’s eight attempts. Messick’s first match winner this year was his third goal of the season. The Trojans had nine corner kicks, compared to six for the visiting Bulldogs.

Wingate senior goalkeeper Peter Trask (Alpaus, N.Y.) recorded one save and allowed two goals during his 90 minutes of action. Anderson junior keeper Lukas Hesse (Berlin, Germany) also went the distance, earning three saves and surrendering one goal.
