Wingate competes in Charlotte Duals

Bulldog men take two victories in season opener

The Wingate University cross country teams completed in the Charlotte Duals Saturday, hosted by the Charlotte 49ers at the Frank Liske Park. For the Wingate men, sophomore Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) was 12th with a 5K time of 16:14.64. The 2010 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year, Hammond was the top NCAA Division II finisher in the event.
 
Hammond and his Bulldog teammates defeated NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University 28-29 and SAC rival Catawba College 20-39. Wingate fell to Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) University 15-40, Charlotte 18-45 and Wofford College 25-30. Wingate freshman Jordan Phillips (Cornelius, N.C.) supported Hammond’s efforts with a time of 17:12.97. Phillips finished 34th in his collegiate debut.
 
Wingate sophomore Max Courtney (Monroe, N.C.) was third on the Bulldog charts with a time of 17:40.75. The CATA product placed 40th overall. Classmate James Lawson (Wake Forest, N.C.) was close on Courtney’s heels with a time of 17:45.44. Lawson was 42nd overall. Bulldog senior Ryan Burris (New London, N.C.) was 47th with a 5K time of 18:22.46.
 
Other finishers for Wingate include freshman Scott Pullen (Roswell, Ga.), sophomore Kyle Osburn (Orrville, Ohio), senior Robert Cook (Bradford, England) and sophomore Morgan Humphrey (Charlotte, N.C.). Pullen was 49th with a 5K time of 18:54.86. Osburn (52nd, 19:12.25), Cook (54th, 19:38.05) and Humphrey (56th, 20:18.81) complete the Bulldog contingent.
 
Wingate junior Melanie Wollenberg (New Lexington, Ohio) topped the women’s charts with a 5K time of 21:43.39. She finished 37th on the individual leader board. Wollenberg was the second NCAA Division II runner to complete the course Saturday. Bulldog freshman Austin Hoffman (Valdese, N.C.) was 38th with a time of 22:08.68. Junior Rachael Winterling (Weaverville, N.C.) was 41st with a time of 22:27.39.           
 
Bulldog senior Lindsay Lippencott (Forest Hill, Md.) placed 43rd. The Capital One Academic All-America® candidate posted a 5K time of 22:45.32. Freshman Rebecca Seabock (Hickory, N.C.) was the top Bulldog female newcomer Saturday, clocking a 5K time of 23:09.18. The St. Stephens graduate finished in the 45th position.
 
Other finishers for Wingate include sophomores Tiana Barnes (Winchester, Calif.) and Katie Brown (Chesnee, S.C.). Barnes was 46th with a time of 23:10.69, while Brown was 52nd with a time of 25:32.21. In the dual meet competition, Wingate defeated Catawba 20-39. The Bulldogs dropped four NCAA Division I decisions to Saint Joseph’s (15-40), Charlotte (15-40), Gardner-Webb (22-35) and Wofford (15-40).
 
“We had good opening efforts from everyone who ran,” Wingate head coach Dr. Dennis Johnson says. “Our coaching staff believes this gives us something to build upon. Once we run our full squad, we will have a better idea how our season will unfold.”
