Wingate rallies for 29-26 overtime victory at UNC Pembroke Saturday

Bulldogs score 16 unanswered points in the final 10 minutes to force OT

Pembroke, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt senior quarterback Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) found junior wide receiver Josh Clawson (Clover, S.C.) for a four-yard touchdown in overtime, giving the Bulldogs a 29-26 come-from-behind victory over UNC Pembroke at Grace P. Johnson Stadium and Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field on the UNCP campus.
 
Wingate (1-2 overall) rallied with 16 unanswered points in the final 9:54 to force overtime. The Bulldogs compiled 446 yards total offense Saturday. Haffly completed 33-of-52 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns. UNC Pembroke (2-1 overall) had 381 yards total offense. Braves senior running back Travis Daniels (Washington, N.C.) rushed 33 times for 127 yards and one score.
 
Haffly broke Wingate’s career passing touchdown record Saturday. His two TD connections give him 74 for his career. Wingate and SAC Hall of Famer Vernon Buck (1991-94) shared the record with Haffly prior to Saturday. Buck posted 72 career scoring strikes. Haffly’s 300-yard game is the 12th of his Bulldog career. The 2010 Harlon Hill Trophy candidate had nine 300-yard games during Wingate’s SAC championship season last year.
 
UNC Pembroke led 23-7 when sophomore wide receiver Te’Vell Williams (Omaha, Neb.) caught his second touchdown from redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Charles (Murphy, N.C.) with 11:37 to play. The Charles-to-Williams connection covered 20 yards. The Braves missed the extra point following the 14-play, 82-yard drive.
 
Haffly moved Wingate down the field in a hurry, marching the Bulldogs 70 yards on seven plays. The 97-second drive ended on a one-yard touchdown plunge by true freshman running back Josh Covington (Charlotte, N.C.), his second of the afternoon and his career. Haffly’s two-point conversion pass was not successful, making the score 23-13 UNC Pembroke with 9:54 remaining.
 
The Braves went three-and-out, giving the ball back to the Bulldogs. Wingate sophomore defensive back Timmy Rogers (Sumter, S.C.) gave the visitors excellent field position with a 20-yard punt return to the Bulldog 47-yard line.
 
Wingate moved 36 yards on 10 plays, setting the stage for a 34-yard field goal by redshirt junior place kicker Matthew Sierk (Saluda, N.C.). The kick split the uprights with 5:10 to play in regulation. The field goal is Sierk’s first career three-pointer.
 
Bulldog senior placekicker Paul Grammaticopoulos (Paris, France) entered to attempt the on-side kick, but the ball did not travel 10 yards. The Braves downed the ball at the Wingate 39-yard line. The Bulldog defense held Daniels and UNCP to eight rushing yards on three plays. After two delay of game penalties on the hosts, Braves redshirt sophomore punter Bill Stanley (Ramseur, N.C.) booted the ball out-of-bounds at the Wingate three-yard line, giving the Bulldogs the football with 2:46 left in the contest.
 
Haffly completed nine passes to six different receivers on the game-tying drive. Junior wide receiver Chris Bowden (Forsyth, Ga.) grabbed three receptions on the drive, including a 21-yard catch on third-and-14 on the Wingate 39. Haffly and Clawson connected for 24 yards on the next play from scrimmage. The 11-play, 97-yard march ended when Haffly found redshirt sophomore tight end Mark Clyburn (Wingate, N.C.) with a one-yard TD strike. Sierk added the extra point and the contest was tied 23-23 with 24 seconds remaining.
 
After one incomplete pass, the Braves took a knee to end 60 minutes of regulation. Wingate won the overtime coin toss by calling heads; the Bulldogs chose to play defense first. UNC Pembroke gained nine yards on three plays, settling for a 33-yard field goal by Baskett and a 26-23 edge.
 
Haffly found redshirt freshman wide receiver Bryan Caffrey (Bayside, N.Y.) for 11 yards and a first down on third-and-eight from the UNCP 23-yard line. The Bulldogs gained eight yards to the Braves’ four-yard line. Haffly connected with Clawson on third-and-two for the winning score. The Bulldogs were successful on eight-of-19 third-down conversions and two-of-two fourth-down conversions Saturday.
 
UNC Pembroke led 10-0 after one quarter, thanks to a Baskett 32-yard field goal and a 26-yard TD scamper by Daniels midway through the first frame. The Daniels score was made possible by an interception. A one-yard TD run by Covington completed a 15-play, 63-yard drive with 1:18 left in the second stanza. Covington’s first career TD was facilitated by an interception from junior defensive back Jarvis Smith (Godfrey, Ill.). Sierk’s PAT made the score 10-7 UNC Pembroke at intermission.
 
In the third quarter, Charles finished an eight-play, 60-yard drive with a 21-yard scoring strike to Williams. Baskett’s extra point made the score 17-7 at the 6:59 mark and set the stage for a wild-and-woolly fourth quarter.
 
Caffrey caught a career-high nine passes for 101 yards Saturday. Bowden grabbed eight catches for 89 yards, while redshirt senior wide receiver Marquise Allen (Monroe, N.C.) had seven receptions. Wingate junior running back Andrew Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) had 15 carries for 49 yards, while Covington ran 10 times for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Nallenweg also caught three passes Saturday.
 
Charles completed 20-of-34 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He utilized 10 receivers Saturday. Williams was one of three Braves who caught three passes. Stanley had three punts down inside the 20-yard line. He averaged 42.8 yards per punt on four kicks. Wingate redshirt freshman punter Austin Anthony (Greensboro, N.C.) did Stanley one better, placing four punts inside the 20. Anthony averaged 38 yards per punt on seven kicks.
 
Wingate redshirt junior linebacker Jared Seate (Charlotte, N.C.) had a huge game with a career-high 18 tackles. He had 11 solo stops and a forced fumble. Seate also shared a tackle for loss. Smith and redshirt junior linebacker Robert Fletcher (Lancaster, S.C.) had nine tackles each. Rogers had seven tackles and one pass interception. UNC Pembroke redshirt junior linebacker Fred Williams (Fayetteville, N.C.) matched Seate with 18 tackles. Williams recorded 13 solo stops.
