#21 Mars Hill outlasts Wingate 1-0 Saturday evening

Mars Hill, N.C.----Mars Hill College’s Felipe Ferraro scored his third goal of the season in the 69th minute to lead the 21st-ranked Lions (4-2, 1-0 SAC) to a 1-0 victory over Wingate (2-4, 0-1 SAC) on Saturday at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the Mars Hill attack broke the tie 24 minutes into the second period. Ferraro went through two defenders before beating Bulldog goalkeeper Julian Garcia top shelf from eight yards out.

Wingate threatened to tie the match in the 88th minute. A shot by senior Tom Poole was blocked; the rebound went to junior Zach Machuca, who put a shot on goal. Mars Hill goalkeeper Zac Scott made one of his nine saves in the match to preserve the shutout.

Scott now has nine career shutouts. Garcia made six saves for the Bulldogs. Wingate freshman Stephen Harris made one save over the final 17 minutes.

The Lions outshot the Bulldogs 20-13; the hosts held the edge in corner kicks 7-1. Wingate hosts Lander University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Mars Hill travels to USC Aiken on Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
