Mars Hill, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2011 SAC season with a 1-0 win at Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Lions fall to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.
The first half went scoreless, with Wingate holding 9-1 advantage in shots and 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The lone goal of the contest came 7:39 into the second half, when junior defender
Kelly Moldenhauer (Mint Hill, N.C.) scored her first goal of the year on a penalty kick to give Wingate a 1-0 lead.
That would be all of the scoring in the contest. Wingate dominated the game, out-shooting Mars Hill 17-2 on the afternoon. The Bulldogs had 10 shots on goal on the afternoon, while Mars Hill had two. Freshman goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had a pair of saves to preserve the shutout for the Bulldogs.
Becca Sellers had four saves for the Lions.
The Bulldogs are back in action Monday, playing their first home game of the season when they host USC Aiken at 7 p.m.
