Fred Parker (Baton Rouge, La.) scored two goals Wednesday night, leading the Bearcats to a 2-1 NCAA Division II men’s soccer victory over visiting Wingate University at the Jeff May Complex.
The number nine team in this week’s NSCAA/adidas® NCAA Division II top 25 poll, Lander improves to 4-1-1 overall. Wingate is 2-5 overall. The Bulldogs return to South Atlantic Conference play Friday night, hosting Tusculum College at 6 p.m. The contest begins Legends Weekend at the WU Soccer Complex.
“We played very well,” Wingate head coach
Gary Hamill says. “I’m disappointed in the result, because we had our opportunities. On the other hand, it was nice to see the spark from our guys. We will keep working hard…and the results will follow.”
With only 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Parker gave the host Bearcats a 1-0 lead when he scored directly in front of the goal from an assist from LU sophomore forward

Wingate tied the game at 57:50 when junior forward

Scott Playle (Fife, Scotland) and scored on an assist from freshman running mate

Parker tallied the game-winner in the 76th minute when he knocked in a missed shot by Lander junior midfielder
Mathias Jensen (Skaevinge, Denmark). The Bearcats outshot the Bulldogs 13-10. The number one team in the Southeast Region, Lander held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Stephen Harris (Lincolnton, N.C.) recorded four saves. Playle had two saves for Lander. The LU Bearcats visit Newberry College Saturday at 4 p.m.
