Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, N.C.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Indians to a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer victory over visiting Wingate University Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Bulldogs saw a six-match winning streak end as the Indians won for the fourth time in their last five matches.
The number eight team in the NSCAA/Continental Tires NCAA Division II top 25 poll, Wingate drops its first SAC match of the season. The Bulldogs are 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. Catawba is 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-3 in the SAC. Wingate visits Anderson (S.C.) Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. SAC contest.
Faughnan fed junior defender
Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, Ireland) for the match-winning goal in the 57th minute. Faughnan tallied his team-best seventh goal in the 89th minute to complete the scoring. The Jacksonville High School product also leads Catawba in points (17).
Catawba scored first, 33 seconds into the contest, when senior forward
Valentin Nava (Salisbury, N.C.) scored on an assist from senior midfielder
Carson Smith (Mooresville, N.C.). Nava’s fourth goal of the season was the only first-half marker, as the Indians took a 1-0 lead to the halftime locker room.
Wingate tied the score 1-1 in the 48th minute, as freshman defender
Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded his second goal of the season on a cross from senior forward
Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The Bulldogs outshot the Indians 16-9 with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Wingate had seven corner kicks to three for Catawba.

Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, N.C.) earned the victory, recording six saves in 90 minutes. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper
Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario) lost for only the second time this season. Kang also went the distance, posting two saves.
