Belmont, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs stepped out of conference play Monday afternoon, registering a 2-0 victory at Belmont Abbey College in NCAA Division II women’s soccer action. The Bulldogs win their seventh straight match, improving to 10-1-1 overall. The Crusaders fall to 7-7 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, senior forward
Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) got the Bulldogs on the board in the 58th minute, with the assist coming from sophomore forward
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.). Forza is second on the team with four goals this season.
Wingate added some insurance with seven minutes remaining in regulation, when Montgomery netted her league-best 16th goal of the season. Junior midfielder
Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) and freshman forward
Kalyn Meosky (Hickory, N.C.) assisted on the play, as Montgomery registered a point for the eight consecutive contest.
The Bulldogs out-shot Belmont Abbey 17-9 on the day, holding a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had five saves to preserve the shutout for Wingate.
Hannah Kohls collected 10 saves for the Crusaders.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m.
