Wingate and Tusculum battle to 0-0 tie Saturday night

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University and Tusculum College men’s soccer teams played to a scoreless 0-0 tie Saturday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs and the Pioneers battled for 110 minutes, but neither team could find the back of the nets.

Entering Saturday, Wingate was the only SAC team without a tie. The host Bulldogs are 10-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the SAC. Tusculum is 7-7-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the SAC. Wingate will host Anderson (S.C.) in a Food Lion SAC tournament first round contest Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Tusculum will hit the road Tuesday, visiting top seed Mars Hill for its first round encounter.

“This was a tough game for us,” Wingate head coach Gary Hamill says. “I thought we didn’t get any momentum in the final third. Overall, it has been a very successful regular season. We are looking forward to the tournament.”

Wingate outshot Tusculum 17-6 Saturday. The Bulldogs held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate freshman defender Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had the only shot in the second overtime, as he missed a header opportunity.

The Bulldogs took three of the four shots in the first extra frame. Both Bulldog senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior midfielder Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had shots saved by Tusculum freshman goalkeeper Victor Ohlin (Angelholm, Sweden). Wingate freshman midfielder John Currie (Enniskillen, Ireland) missed a shot wide in the first overtime.

Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) earned his second career shutout in as many nights. DeGraff posted four saves. Ohlin had seven saves. Both keepers played 110 minutes each. Despite the huge shot deficit, Tusculum held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Bulldog family honored three seniors in pre-game ceremonies. In addition to Lima, Wingate recognized midfielder Joshua Jokic (Brisbane, Australia) and defender Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.). Lima and McCollom were both key contributors to Wingate’s 2010 SAC championship and NCAA play-off team.
