Trojans knock off Bulldogs 1-0 in SAC Tourney quarterfinals

Wingate, N.C.----The fifth-seeded Trojans of Anderson University eliminated the fourth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs from the 2012 Food Lion SAC men’s soccer tournament Wednesday afternoon, winning 1-0 in quarterfinal action. The Trojans advance to Friday’s semifinals, improving to 5-10-3 overall. Wingate falls to 10-5-1 on the season.

Senior defender Zak Moss (Fairfield, Ohio) scored the only goal of the contest in the 17th minute, taking a cross from sophomore forward Tapiwa Munesti (Anderson, S.C.) and netting his first goal of the season.

Wingate held a 5-3 advantage in shots on the afternoon, while Anderson held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

The Bulldogs ended the contest with a slim 8-7 advantage in shots, with Anderson holding a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Lukas Hesse (Berlin, Germany) had two saves to preserve the shutout for the Trojans. Sophomore Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) registered three saves for the Bulldogs. Senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a game-high three shots for the Bulldogs.

Anderson will take on the winner of the Mars Hill vs. Tusculum contest Friday at 7 p.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. The Bulldogs, who are ranked fifth in Wednesday’s NCAA regional ranking, will wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
