Wingate, N.C.----For the second consecutive year, Wingate University sophomore forward
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) registered a hat trick in the opening round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament, leading the Bulldogs to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Wolves of Newberry College Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs win their 11th straight match, improving to 14-1-1 overall and advancing to Friday’s semifinal contest. Newberry ends its season at 7-8-4 overall.
Montgomery scored the game’s first goal five minutes into the contest, heading in a cross from junior midfielder
Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.) to make it 1-0. Wingate would take a 1-0 lead into halftime, out-shooting the Wolves 10-3 in the opening half.
Montgomery scored her second goal of the day and nation’s-best 20th of the year in the 52nd minute. Junior midfielder
Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) set up the goal with a cross from the right corner.
Murphy’s cross two minutes later found freshman
Danielle Cremmen (Acton, Mass.), who ripped one into the corner for her fifth goal of the season, putting Wingate on top 3-0.
Montgomery finished her fourth career hat trick in the 63rd minute, taking another cross from Murphy and heading it into the opposite corner to push the lead to four. The SAC Player of the Year leads the nation with 21 goals, while also leading the nation in goals per game and points per game. She has registered at least one point in each of her last 10 contests. Murphy has a team-best nine assists for Wingate this year.
Newberry got on the board with 17 minutes remaining when sophomore forward
Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) netted her 10th goal of the year to make the final margin 4-1.
The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 24-9 on the afternoon, holding a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) notched a save to preserve the Wingate win. Sophomore
Morgan Cox (Perth, Australia) had six saves for Newberry.
Wingate will take on the winner of the Lincoln Memorial/Tusculum contest Friday at 4 p.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
