#15 Wingate downs LMU 3-2 for sixth straight win

Wingate, N.C.----The 15th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs overcame an early 1-0 deficit, notching a 3-2 victory over the visiting Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action Saturday night. Wingate wins its sixth straight, improving to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. LMU falls to 6-3-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
 
The Railsplitters struck early, scoring just 2:46 into the contest when junior midfielder Mario Pinto (Uberlandia, Brazil) chipped one over the Wingate goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Yuri Passos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) assisted on Pinto’s ninth goal of the season.
 
The Bulldogs scored the equalizer 2:14 before intermission, when sophomore forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ripped one into the back of the net, notching his team-best fifth goal of the year to make it 1-1 at intermission.
 
Freshman defender Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put the Bulldogs on top 2-1 in the 62nd minute, scoring his first career goal on a header off the free kick from freshman midfielder John Currie (Enniskillen, Ireland).
 
The Bulldogs added some insurance 11 minutes later, when junior midfielder Pedro Figuiera (Sao Paulo, Brazil) registered his first goal of the season, getting the assist from senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil).
 
The Railsplitters trimmed the deficit to one with 4:28 remaining in regulation when senior midfielder Calum Calder (Strathaven, Scotland) ripped one into the upper right corner, netting his second goal of the season to make it 2-1.
 
Wingate out-shot LMU 19-6 on the night, holding a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) had two saves to preserve the victory for the Bulldogs. Sophomore goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz (Berlin, Germany) piled up 11 saves for the Railsplitters.
 
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba for a 7 p.m. start. Lincoln Memorial hosts Tusculum Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
