Katie Simpson (Indian Trail, N.C.) scored two goals Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs past the visiting Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. Wingate wins its fourth straight, improving to 7-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. LMU falls to 5-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Simpson got the scoring started in the 16th minutes, taking a pass from freshman forward
Kalyn Meosky (Hickory, N.C.) and ripping one into the corner from just inside the box to give Wingate the 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added to their lead 14 minutes later when senior forward
Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) found the back of the net off a cross from sophomore forward
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.), giving the ‘Dogs a two-goal lead at halftime.
Simpson put the finishing touches on her afternoon with 2:06 remaining in the second half, scoring on a free kick from a tough angle just outside the box, netting her third goal of the season to make the final margin 3-0.
Wingate out-shot LMU 16-9 on the day, holding an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had four saves to preserve the shutout for Wingate. Freshman
Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) had six saves for the Railsplitters.
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Catawba for a 5 p.m. start. Lincoln Memorial hosts Tusculum Wednesday at 1 p.m.
