The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Braves fall to 0-2 on the year.

McGee went six-of-eight from the field and 10-for-10 from the free throw line, while also handing out three assists. Senior forward Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.) added 10 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) had nine points, knocking down three triples in the first half. Junior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) registered eight points and seven boards for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore forward Jazmine Kemp (Elizabethtown, N.C.) had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the UNCP attack. Senior guard Amelia Partin (Raleigh, N.C.) added 15 points, hitting five-of-11 shots from three-point range.

“Morgan was an important and huge presence for us tonight,” Wingate head coach Ann Hancock says. “…most impressive was the fact she played quality minutes with two first-half fouls. She is incredibly strong and she is a woman of few words. Morgan comes to the gym ready to play.”

A lay-up and jumper from freshman guard Chandrica Fuller (Durham, N.C.) gave the Braves a 19-16 advantage 10 minutes into the opening half. A Bonner triple, followed by a three-point play from Morgan put the Bulldogs on top 27-21 with five minutes remaining in the half. Buckets from McGee and Logan made it 31-24 with 1:30 to go. A Fuller jumper and a pair of Kemp free throws right before the half cut Wingate’s lead to three heading to intermission.

A three from Partin, followed by a free throw from Kemp gave the Braves a 41-40 edge five minutes into the second half. Wingate answered with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three-point play from McGee and a triple from Williams, to take a 48-41 advantage. UNCP trimmed the deficit to five on a lay-up from Kemp with six minutes remaining.

Partin knocked down another triple to get the Braves to within four at the 5:11 mark. McGee answered with a jumper to push the advantage back to six, but a Kemp free throw cut the lead back to five with 2:54 to go. Senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) came up with a big steal, while Logan knocked down a triple on Wingate’s ensuing possession to make the score 61-53. Another Logan bucket made the margin 63-53 with 1:24 to go, giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game.

Wingate shot 37 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-24 shots from three-point range (29.2 percent). The Braves shot 38.2 percent from the field, hitting eight-of-25 shots from beyond the arc (32 percent). The Bulldogs knocked down 16-of-19 free throws on the afternoon, while UNCP hit only six-of-eight from the line. Wingate also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Braves 42-29.

“It is interesting…Montevallo and UNC Pembroke have two totally different defensive styles,” Hancock says. “I am happy we were able to make adjustments. I thought we handled the pressure well…and made plays when we needed to make plays.”

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to USC Aiken for a 7 p.m. start. The Braves travel to St. Andrews Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start.
