Box Score Aiken, S.C.----Four USC Aiken Pacers hit double figures as the NCAA’s number five team stayed perfect on the young 2012-13 season with a 72-49 women’s basketball victory over Wingate at the Convocation Center on Wednesday evening. Bulldog junior guard
Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) led the visiting South Atlantic Conference members with 11 points.
Both teams played in the 2012 NCAA tournament. USC Aiken improves to 2-0 overall, while Wingate slips to 2-1 overall. USC Aiken shot 46.2 percent as a team (30-of-65), while holding Wingate to 37.8 percent shooting from the floor (17-of-45). The Pacers knocked down 43.8 percent of their three-point attempts (seven-of-16).
“USC Aiken was very aggressive…they took us out of our offense,” Wingate head coach Ann Hancock says. “We can take several positives from this game, including the play of sophomores Sarah Burnick and Jakari Thompson.”
“Rebounding was the story of the game,” Hancock says. “We managed only five offensive rebounds the entire night.” USC Aiken outrebounded Wingate 43-32, with sophomore forward Mackenzie Reese (Madison, Wis.) pulling down nine boards. Bulldog senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) led Wingate with six rebounds.
Senior guard Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind.) hit five of USC Aiken’s seven treys in the game en route to claiming a game-best 19 points. She acquired 16 of her 19 points in the second stanza. Tarailo led four Pacers in double figures.
USC Aiken junior point guard Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va.) closed out her evening with 15 points, seven assists and seven steals. Senior forward Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C.) filled out her statistics sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Porsha Martin (Douglasville, Ga.) completed the quartet with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The lead changed hands five times in the first half. USC Aiken would enter halftime clinging to an 11-point lead at 34-23. The Pacers opened the second stanza on a 15-3 run and never looked back. Wingate freshman forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) added 10 points and four rebounds off the Bulldog bench Wednesday.
Wingate continues its tour of the Peach Belt Conference Saturday, visiting defending region champion and NCAA Division II number 20 Lander University. The Bulldogs and the Bearcats met in the 2012 NCAA Southeast Region title contest at USC Aiken. Saturday’s tip-off in Greenwood, S.C. is slated for 3 p.m. Wingate’s first four contests are against PBC foes.
USC Aiken hosts Catawba Saturday at 7 p.m. The Pacers edged Catawba 71-69 in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at the Convocation Center.
