UNC Pembroke rallies for 63-58 victory over #22 Wingate

Bulldog junior Chantal Dunbar has 17 points and 13 boards

Box Score Pembroke, N.C.----Wingate University junior forward Chantal Dunbar (Norfolk, Va.) tallied a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high (tying) 13 rebounds, but UNC Pembroke avenged an earlier loss in a 63-58 NCAA Division II women’s basketball victory Saturday at the English E. Jones Center. The UNCP Braves are 4-2 overall, while the number 22 Bulldogs fall to 4-3 overall.
 
Dunbar had 10 offensive rebounds for the visiting Bulldogs. Wingate junior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) had 15 points, three steals and three rebounds, while senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) had 12 points, six assists and four rebounds. The remaining Bulldogs shot 16.1 percent from the floor (five-of-31).
 
UNC Pembroke sophomore post Kierra Haney (Tabor City, N.C.) had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Amelia Partin (Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 points. Partin hit three-of-six shots from three-point range. The Braves bench outscored the Bulldog reserves 19-6.
 
Wingate led 44-36 when Williams hit a three-point field goal on an assist from freshman forward Sharee Boyd (Charlotte, N.C.) with 9:23 to go in the second half. Two Dunbar free throws made the score 50-42 Bulldogs with 6:58 remaining. UNC Pembroke went on a 10-2 run to tie the score 52-52 on a lay-up by sophomore forward Jazmine Kemp (Elizabethtown, N.C.) with 4:36 left.
 
Bulldog freshman forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) hit two free throws on the next trip down the court, giving the visitors their final lead of the evening at 54-52. Jumpers by junior guard Wayne Mack (Louisville, Ky.) and Partin gave the hosts a 56-54 edge with 3:32 to play. One minute later, a McGee follow tied the score for the eighth and final time at 56.
 
Wingate was zero-for-six from the floor in the final two minutes. Two free throws by senior guard Jasmine Hairston (Danville, Va.) gave the Braves the lead for good at 58-56 with 1:28 remaining in regulation. The Bulldogs missed three shots on the next trip down the court. A fast-break hoop by freshman guard Chandrica Fuller (Durham, N.C.) gave UNCP a 60-56 lead with 39 seconds to go.
 
Dunbar hit two free throws with 26 seconds to play, cutting the Wingate deficit in half. Fuller hit a lay-up on a feed from Mack five seconds later to push the lead to four. Kemp hit one free throw in the waning moments to account for the final margin.
 
UNC Pembroke hit 16-of-30 field goals in the second half (53.3 percent). For the game, the Braves made 25-of-54 (46.3 percent). Wingate hit 21-of-67 on the afternoon (31.3 percent). UNCP hit six three-point field goals, while Wingate made four. Wollett had two triples to lead the Bulldogs.
