'Dogs hope to make SAC standings move against Bears Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University and Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s basketball teams will look to make a move in the South Atlantic Conference standings tonight, as the Bulldogs (13-7 overall, 7-5 SAC) host the Bears (16-5 overall, 8-4 SAC) in Cuddy Arena. Game time is 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, Wingate senior guard Tiffany Brown (Cartersville, Ga.) posted a season-high 13 points to lead the Bulldogs to 63-57 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in Shuford Gymnasium. Brown was one of three players in double figures for Wingate. Bulldog senior forward Simone Rutledge (Atlanta, Ga.) had 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while senior guard Kurie Washington (Marion, N.C.) added 10 points for the visitors. Lenoir-Rhyne freshman guard Jazmine Charles had 10 points.

In addition, Bulldog junior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) had eight points, six assists and five rebounds. Wingate coach Barbara Nelson called on 11 players Wednesday night and 10 found the scoring column. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Bears 47-39 with a 21-14 advantage in offensive rebounds. Wingate had 20 second-chance points, compared to four for Lenoir-Rhyne.

Lenoir-Rhyne junior guard Whitley Culler and senior guard Cameron Sealey had nine points each for the Bears. Culler’s seven boards topped the L-R rebounding brigade. Wingate held Lenoir-Rhyne 16 points below its season average.

Brown added a team-high four steals and four rebounds to her Jan. 11 statistics ledger. Rutledge and sophomore guard Nikki Burton (Charlotte, N.C.) had two blocked shots each for the visitors. Washington and junior forward Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.) pulled down six rebounds each. The two teams combined for 54 turnovers (28 for L-R, 26 for Wingate).

Each month, the Wingate women’s basketball team participates in (at least) one community service project that focuses on helping others. Tonight, Wingate will bring attention to Samaritan’s Feet as the Bulldogs host L-R. On Saturday afternoon, Wingate will partner with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host Play 4Kay. The Bulldogs entertain Tusculum Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will take place in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus.

Samaritan’s Feet models servant leadership in a simple way: by washing the feet and providing a new pair of socks and shoes to impoverished children worldwide. Nelson and the Bulldog coaching staff will coach the Lenoir-Rhyne in their bare feet to provide a voice for the 300,000,000 million children who wake every day in their bare feet.

For 2012 and beyond, the WBCA Pink Zone™ has been rebranded as Play 4Kay. The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, will remain intact: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund™ will continue to be the official charity of the initiative. The justification behind the rebranding is to keep the story and legacy of Kay Yow at the forefront of every ideal the Fund embraces.
