Wingate's Lucia Careaga Herrera finishes second in SAC

Bulldogs claim fifth place on team leader board Tuesday

Conover, N.C.----Wingate University freshman Lucia Careaga Herrera (Madrid, Spain) shot a two-under-par 70 Tuesday, catapulting herself to second place in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference at the 5,857 yard, par-72 Rock Barn Golf Club. Careaga Herrera’s 70 was the best score Tuesday in the third and final round of the 54-hole event.
 
On the team leader board, the Bulldogs held serve to finish in fifth place at 981. Wingate shot 330 Tuesday to go with rounds of 326 and 325 Monday. Newberry took home the team and individual hardware, as the Wolves finished at 919, 19 strokes ahead of second place Lincoln Memorial (938). Newberry senior Maria Luz Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) earned medalist honors with a 218. The SAC Golfer of the Year shot 71 Tuesday to finish 10 strokes ahead of Wingate’s Careaga Herrera.
 
Wingate freshman Karli Soracco (Turner, Maine) finished in 24th place at 249. She shot 86 Tuesday to go with her 82-81 scores from Monday. Sophomore Samantha Pugh-Gilder (Pinehurst, N.C.) was one stroke back at 250. Pugh-Gilder shot an 84 Tuesday to tie for 25th place. She carded bookend 83s Monday.
 
Bulldog junior Megan Levy (Zebulon, N.C.) tied for 29th place with a 54-hole total of 254. She shot 90 Tuesday after posting scores of 83 and 81 Monday. Sophomore Morgan Pegram (Pfafftown, N.C.) also shot 90 Tuesday following rounds of 86 and 88 Monday. Pegram completed her first Food Lion SAC tournament in 37th place.
 
Tusculum (950), Carson-Newman (953), Wingate (981), Catawba (987), Anderson (S.C.) (1005), Lenoir-Rhyne (1028), Brevard (1140) and Mars Hill (1183) occupy spots three through 10 on the team leader board. Joining Besio and Careaga Herrera on the all-tournament team are LMU redshirt junior Desta Coaker (Dunsford, Ontario), Tusculum freshman Emee Herbert (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Newberry junior Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain).
 
Coaker and Herbert tied for third at 229. Coaker posted rounds of 77-76-76, while Herbert carded 73-81-75. Castro claimed fifth place with a 231. She hit even-par 72 Tuesday to go with rounds of 81 and 78 Monday.
 
The Food Lion SAC tournament concludes the 2012 season for the Bulldogs. Wingate did not have any seniors in 2012, so Bulldog head coach Dr. Jerry Surratt welcomes back his entire team for the 2013 campaign.
