‘Dogs open season with 2-1 win at Barton

Wilson, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got goals from senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior forward Fabio Azeredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to notch a 2-1 victory over the host Bulldogs of Barton College in NCAA Division II men’s soccer action Thursday night. Wingate improves to 1-0 on the year, while Barton falls to 0-1 overall.
 
Lima got the scoring started 23:35 into the contest, with the assist coming from junior midfielder Pedro Figuiera (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Wingate took the 1-0 lead into halftime, holding a 10-4 edge in shots and 6-0 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Azeredo gave the Bulldogs some insurance, scoring 15 minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. Sophomore forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior defender Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.) assisted on the play.
 
The hosts got on the board six minutes later on a goal from sophomore defender Dante De Luca (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
 
Each team took 14 shots on the night, but the visiting Bulldogs held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) collected five saves, all in the second half during his Wingate debut. Junior Vasily Yakimkin (Astrakhan, Russia) had eight saves for Barton.
 
Wingate returns to action Saturday night, hosting Francis Marion at 7 p.m. Barton travels to Erskine Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
