Montgomery and Meosky lead ‘Dogs past Saints in season opener

Gaffney, S.C.----Wingate University sophomore midfielder Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) and freshman forward Kalyn Meosky (Hickory, N.C.) scored two goals each to lead the Bulldogs past the Saints of Limestone College 6-1 Thursday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The defending Food Lion SAC Tournament champs are 1-0 on the young season, while the Saints fall to 0-1.
 
Montgomery got the Bulldogs on the board 11:29 into the first half, chipping one over the head of the Limestone keeper, with the assist coming from freshman midfielder Danielle Cremmen (Acton, Mass.).
 
Limestone tied the match 14 minutes later when senior midfielder Holli Schwartz (Lenoir, N.C.) scored off of a rebound to make it 1-1.
 
The Bulldogs had the immediate response, with Meosky netting her first career goal 26 seconds later to put Wingate on top for good. Junior forward Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) set up the goal with a cross.
 
Montgomery added another goal just seven minutes later, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage. The 2011 All-SAC and All-Region selection headed in a cross from Cremmen to notch her second goal of the afternoon.
 
Wingate wasted little time adding to its lead in the second half, scoring 2:12 into the frame when Meosky scored her second goal of the day off of a deflection, pushing the lead to three.
 
Junior midfielder Meaghan Barry (Naples, Fla.) put Wingate on top 5-1, scoring off a corner kick with 14:15 remaining in the contest. Murphy capped the scoring on the afternoon, scoring on a corner kick with 10 seconds left, making the final margin 6-1.
 
Wingate outshot Limestone 22-11 on the day, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Montana Lucky (Winnipeg, Manitoba) notched a save to preserve the victory for the Bulldogs in her collegiate debut. Junior Tori Waddell (Greenville, S.C) had two saves for the Saints.
 
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Queens University of Charlotte to open the 2012 home slate. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Saints return to action Sunday, traveling to Georgia Southwestern for a 3 p.m. start.
