Da Silva nets match-winner as ‘Dogs blank Bearcats

Wingate, N.C.----For the second time in as many home games this season, Wingate University sophomore forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored a second half match-winner to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory. Wingate defeated the visiting Bearcats of Lander University Wednesday night, improving to 3-1 overall. Lander suffers its first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 overall.
 
The two teams went scoreless in the opening half, with Wingate holding a 5-1 advantage in shots. Neither team registered a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 67th minute, when Da Silva fired a line drive in the upper left corner with his left foot, netting his second goal of the season. Senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) assisted on the play.
 
Wingate outshot the Bearcats 16-4 on the night, holding a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Da Silva had a match-high eight shots, including four shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) had a pair of saves to preserve his second shutout of the season. Freshman Barrett Nielsen (Ottawa, Canada) had five saves for Lander.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, opening conference play at Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. The Bearcats host Georgia Southwestern in their conference opener Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
