‘Dogs down Eagles 2-1 for third straight win

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs registered their third consecutive win Saturday night, defeating the visiting Eagles of Carson-Newman College 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action at the Wingate Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Carson-Newman falls to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
 
“I am very pleased with the work ethic, especially after we fell behind 1-0,” head coach Gary Hamill says. “We played a great second half and I thought we showed a strong mentality against a very good Carson-Newman team.”
 
The Eagles got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Joao Pedro Dowsley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) ripped a line drive from just inside of the box into the corner, making it 1-0 10:50 into the contest.
 
Wingate had the answer four minutes later, when senior defender Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.) scored off a corner kick from junior midfielder Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The goal was the second career goal for the all-conference defender, and first since his freshman season.
 
The game was tied at halftime, with Wingate holding a 10-3 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs also had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal at intermission.
 
Wingate got the game-winning goal in the 55th minute, when Andrade found senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a lead pass. Lima lined one just inside the near post from the edge of the box, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
 
Wingate finished the match with a 19-7 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs took 11 shots on goal, compared to Carson-Newman’s four. Sophomore goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) had three saves to preserve the Wingate victory. Junior Le Guevel Rumwald (Vannes, France) had nine saves for the Eagles.
 
Wingate is back in action Wednesday night, hosting Newberry at 7 p.m. Carson-Newman hosts Tusculum Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
