Wingate rallies for 2-1 SAC victory over Newberry

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s soccer team captured its fourth victory in a row Wednesday night, taking a 2-1 South Atlantic Conference triumph over Newberry College at the WU Soccer Complex. Bulldog sophomore forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied his fourth match-winner of the season in the 84th minute to give the hosts the win.
 
The number four team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings, Wingate is 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Newberry is 2-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the SAC. Five of Wingate’s six 2012 victories have been one-goal triumphs.
 
Newberry found the scoring column first, as freshman forward Lucas Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded his first collegiate goal on a low line-drive shot. The Ferreira tally occurred in the 46th minute.
 
Wingate tied the contest in the 65th minute with a penalty kick. Bulldog senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) did the honors, scoring his third goal of the season. Lima provided the assist on Da Silva’s match winner.
 
The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 23-6 with an 8-1 margin in shots on goal. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario) picked up the victory between the pipes. Newberry junior goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.) took the loss. Both Kang and Sweatt played 90 minutes. Sweatt had six saves.

Both teams return to SAC play Saturday. Wingate visits Brevard for a 4:30 p.m. contest, while Newberry hosts Lenoir-Rhyne at the same time.
